Bush Hatred

I haven't linked to a Victor Davis Hanson column in a long time, and after reading last Friday's column by him on National Review Online, I have to. He offers his opinion on why a large part of the Left hates (not dislikes, but hates) the president. From someone that leans towards supporting the President overall, but does not vote the Republican Party line, I find this knee-jerk hate especially vexing. I believe he does a fair job at breaking down potential sources for this mass insanity.

In short, the Left hates George W. Bush for who he is rather than what he does. Southern conservatism, evangelical Christianity, a black-and-white worldview, and a wealthy man's disdain for elite culture — none by itself earns hatred, of course, but each is a force multiplier of the other and so helps explain the evolution of disagreement into pathological venom.

Yup, that's about right, I think. I live in a city filled to the brim with people that when you say you're likely going to vote for Bush this fall, you get stares of complete shock. I see stickers on cars every day that say things like, "Bush Lied, People Died" and like drivel. It's apparent that a large chunk of this country has gone insane, and as the definition of insanity states, they don't even realize it.

I can't wait until November comes and goes, and the furor dies down a bit. It never goes away completely, of course, but either Kerry will win and the Left will calm down because "their guy" has the reins, or Bush will win, and the Left will be forced to look into the maw of defeat and realize they're getting more and more marginalized.

I'm betting on the later.
