And Now, Portland

It seems like Oregon is always trying to out-do California in progressiveness (we were first with a bottle deposit bill!), and in this one, we're second in line. But that's ok, because it's such a good thing. Today, gay couples were issued marriage licenses in Multnomah County, where Portland, Oregon is located. I couldn't be happier with the situation, actually. Unlike San Francisco's licenses, these will probably stay good for quite a while -- there's no law in Oregon specifically saying that the issuance of these licenses is against the law.

My bus that I take to work goes right past the government building that they were issuing the licenses, and I saw the giddy, excited people lined up in the rain stretching around the building. A wonderful sight; people finally getting equal protection under the law in America. It's something we take for granted, until we see it taken away.
