Putting Off The Pain

The first gay, bisexual, and transgender public school is opening in New York City this fall. I understand the desire for a place for harassed minorities to gather and learn without fear, but this only looks good on the surface. Doesn't it seem counter-productive to self-segregate like this? What's the difference between this and a black-only high school in a city where only 10% of the population is black? It strikes me as putting off the inevitable. Where there are minorities, there will always be small minded people that exploit the differences for cruel amusement. This doesn't change when you receive you diploma and go to college or enter the work force. The sooner these kids learn how to cope with the pressures and defend themselves, the better.
